2012 KM SS convert to 1x11?

Total newbie here....I recently acquired a 2012 KM on 29" wheels that I would like to convert to a 1x11. What would be a good way to go without breaking the bank? I am looking to set it up for bikepacking.\
    Any suggestions are appreciated!

    Thanks!

If you have the Surly New hub then you will need a different rear wheel to take a cassette. You can pick whether you want Shimano or SRAM style hub, the Shimano will let you get there cheaper.

You can get the SLX group cheapest, it's $135 from CRC. (I was able to put together a mixed set cheaper but it's got no clutch in the RD. Zee 1x10 parts were also cheaper but it was obvious the RD would have a hard time wrapping enough chain links for 11-42.)

And to top it off, you may want a narrow-wide ring to go on your crank.

1x11 is the bee's pajamas, don't let anyone talk you out of it.

I ended up going with SRAM's GX lineup a couple month's ago for my KM. I'd love to be able to provide more feedback, but life got in the way and the parts are still sitting on a shelf. As a self-stated newbie, make sure you grab a narrow/wide chainring along with the rest of your parts.

*edit* and congrats on the bike!
    i can't believe I'm riding a bike.

I see some red on the rear wheel. Is that a White Industries freewheel? That's probably a nice wheel, but you'll need to replace the hub or the wheel. I recommend selling the wheel or keeping it around as a spare for SS mtb duties.

I did the same thing to my 2014 Karate Monkey (same frame as yours). I swapped the rear wheel for a basic model with sram 406 hub and wtb sti23 rim, it should cost about $100 dollars from any bike shop with a QBP account, alternatively, there are also options for a deore/dt swiss or formula/wtb combo for about $120. Also I bought some slx stuff and a raceface narrow wide chainring from chain reaction cycles, it cost about $150. You could possible get a cheaper wheel if you looked for a used one. The bike is super fun as an SS though, you just have to find the right gearing for your terrain.
