    1x1 - remove brake bosses???

Well, Surly say they are removable...

I have been trying to remove the canti/V brake bosses from the fork on my new 1x1. Started with a correct size spanner, then an adjustable, then a tight as I can, white knuckle grip of a mole wrench.

    They are still on,

Nothing will shift them, now of course I have a rounded off, mangled mess...

What sort of a gorilla do they get at Surly to glue them on?!

    Any help much appreciated.

Update - I finally got them off - really leaned on the mole grips and very reluctantly out they came. Unusable again but I guess you can always buy new studs!

    Idea!

Right On! Yeah, the lock-tite's a bit too strong on those.

*Grinding them down's sometimes quicker and easier. Just don't grind off the whole things off to the frame, "violates the warranty".

Come on, what should be the problem when you remove the bosses/studs from the frame and fork. It`s steel - heatingtube steel

Surly says that you can remove them, so i (let) remove them...(from a professional)

New question here. Hmmm, maybe they've changed the policy...

Last I checked, you can unscrew the bosses, but not remove the braze-ons...

Now I'm curious enough to find out.

Absolutely. The studs/bosses are designed to unscrew - as above with a lot of force - but they will shift eventually. The mounts for them are of course welded to the frame/forks and needless to say are not designed to come off!

If they're lock Tight-ed and you're having issues, heat the studs (to release the Loctite).

Answer as far as what they meant, straight from the horse's mouth:

"..Although the brake studs unthread from the welded base, the welded portion is not intented to be removed and we will not honor the warranty failure occurs in this area. Hope that answers your question."

Keep your warranty intact folks, Surly make's solid product , but there's always a remote chance.

these are the key words. if the bb shell falls off, it has nothing to do w/ the canti mounts being removed.
