    Nope, the biggest cog is not fixed, it's press fit on the rest and it's made of alloy. It was designed to be replacable since alloy can wear out faster than steel, you can change that cog when it wears out but the other cogs are still good instead of having to spend hundreds on a whole new cassette.

    But why make it alloy then? Because it needs to be thicker, especially at the center, where it engages the freehub body splines and because most of the torque gets from the chain to the wheel through that cog when you pedal. Making it steel would be much heavier.
