    x.0 no stops

i was riding the other day and as i was going up a short steep hill i went to shift. The derailleur started to rise then the thumb lever lost it catch on the stops of internal ratchet mechanism. now i can't get the thumb lever's internal tooth to hold on to the groove of the turn wheel that pulls the cable. any suggestions. sorry if the wording is confusing i dont know what to call each piece.
today's youth will be the ones running the world in short time. be nice.

sounds like the same issue i had here.

i ended up filing the face of the 'metal bar' until i had removed all of the material back past the point it was worn. this created another 90* angle allowing everything to catch as it's supposed to.

Is it dirty or greasy in your shift body? You may want to try a good spraying with Tri-flow and cycling a bit to see if the pawls are just sticking open too much to catch. Failing that, you can try modifying the shifter as suggested I guess.
