Replacing rear short/medium derailleur with long ok?

    Hi,

Please excuse my extreme lack of knowledge on this subject.

My rear derailleur snapped clean off the other day while biking. It is an SRAM SX.5. I was looking around the net to buy the same one but I couldnt find it.

I bought a SRAM X.5 which arrived today. It is longer than the old one. Does this matter? Would I be able to just fit it or is it not compatible?

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Oliver.

Offhand, I can't think of any reason against just fitting your new derailleur and riding. You don't want to go to too short a cage, for fear of not being able to take up all the slack in the chain. But there's no worry in the other direction, at least not within reasonable and sane limits. You should be fine.
