I have spoken with two seperate LBS's. They both (independantly) claim the only crankset compatible with the Epic Comps is the XX crankset, with a 156 Q-factor.
In addition, both LBS's claim Specialized won't sell them the Carbon crankset from the Expert, to upgrade a Comp.
I don't understand why an XX crankset works, while an X0 crankset won't. I was planning to upgrade mine at the dealer to an X0 red. My plan was to save some weight and give the bike alittle color.
I am far from a bike mechanic. I imagine others have made something else work. However, two Specialized dealers claim that is the only "compatible' crank.
I have a carbon comp sitting unridden right now waiting for parts. The frame is the same as the expert and is a standard PF30 BB with plastic cups to use a GWP BB installed. I have s-works crank arms that I am going to use, but am waiting on a backordered spider assembly, this should be the lightest crankset option for the bike. I am also putting on X.0 shifters, elixir CR brakes (had these from the last bike and like the contact adjust) and roval SL carbon wheels when they come in. can't wait to ride it but specialized need to hurry up those spider assemblies.
I have a Carbon Comp 29er on order and due in this week. The 1st thing I was going to do was swap out the crank. Has anyone tried anything other than the XX 156Q factor? i ws going to go XO 2 x 10. Thanks
I spoke to Bob at Specialized CS this AM. He said you can swap out the stock crank for any of the better SRAM cranks. XO, XX, X9. You should be able to use the installed GXP BB and buy a regular spindled crank or go to PF 30 and remove the adaptor if you want BB30. He double checked with another tech and said just the opposite of the 156Q info. They suggest the wider crank not the 156Q. I'll report back after I make the switch.
First thing I did to my 2011 Epic Comp Carbon 29er was change out the shifters to X0. Next I'm doing full BB30 X0 crank, deraileurs and cassette and chain. Then the Roval Carbon wheels next year.

Out of all the upgrades being talked about here is there nobody has roasted the caliper(s) of the Elixer brakes that came stock on the Comp Epic..? Mine lasted.. oh.. 2 months and DONE. Too bad too, I love the dial adjust idea.. The fade and the pump are lame though..
I also took the racing slip tires off day 1 and am running a WTB prowler 29er F/R with the rear turned around..Best tire for a niner in my opinion..
Im my opinion, ALL Specialized tires suck anyway, even the CAPTAIN- (Sorry Ned, youre still a nice guy)
And I am a mechanic.. If SRAM makes it, its all the same- I hate how LBS try to sell/talk like that..
Okay, anyone actually do the upgrade of the cranks? I have this bike and would like to upgrade to XX or X0 cranks, use the same inner chain ring at 24T. What is the process? I've done many BB replacements in the past but with the adapter and PF30 stories all over this site it would be to nice to hear a real account.
Check in the 2011 epic 29er thread, someone did a comp carbon build with xx cranks. But you won't be able to keep the 24 ring, it is a different bolt pattern.
I have a 2011 comp carbon with S-works cranks/ bars/ rovals. I switch back forth between american classic rims depending on the terrain. Also had a carbon niner fork on it. Bike was down to 20lbs with the niner fork and rovals. The X7 shifters are great, and the X9 rear derailur is awesome. I frequently have to adjust it/ clean it after rides, but 300 miles so far and I love the bike.
I have an Epic Carbon Comp 29. I changed the stock crank to an XO using the existing GXP BB. Was easy. The chain rings are an easy change as well, though I am using the XO rings that came with the crank. Does not look like swapping out the GXP to PF30 will be tough though I haven't gone there yet. The chain rings on the XO are the same as XX, just XX has a carbon spider. I also swapped out the X7/X9 for XX and swapped to a few lighter parts as well. My large has dropped from just over 27lbs to just over 25 without a wheel change(did convert to tubeless but got rid of the renegade on the rear). Wheels next, not sure which ones should put it easily under 24lbs.

Thanks for the reply, same plans for me too  Your new chain rings will require a bit more effort on the climbs since you've added a tooth or over the stock chain rings. I noticed that the sworks epic also has a 24T inner ring. What do you think so far? For normal riding I wouldn't think twice but in a couple races I'm gassed on the last lap and do use the 24T. I suppose, 'just man up' might be response Whaddya think? Do you miss the easier stock ring?
Do you know if there is any other parts you have to buy when going with PF over GXP? I also have a 2011 29er Stumpy Expert Evo, It has the one chain ring in front with SRAM carbon cranks and PF setup. I really love it. Seems like a lighter setup than the PF30 + GXP convert kit on the epic.
Would love to hear what you plan on for wheels, I'll likely go for a wheel change in the fall.
I didn't think I missed the 24 untill Sat when I road a very long and steep climb after a real ttough ride on fr. I think in general I don't miss the 24 except when I'm really spent. May go to the 24 in time. The 24 on my OEM crank would fit on the XO no problem. I will wait and buy the better rings when they are available. I think you just need the PF kit to convert. You'd remove the GXP and adapter and be ready to go according to my tech phone call to Specialized.
Not sure on wheels. Stan's Crest will work with the 142 adaptor. 1575gms. Are there others with 142? Of course, the Spesh wheels will work and save lots of weight but they pricey.
