Frame Size Question: What is "Large" and "Medium?"

I am looking at buying a used 2006 Stumpjumper. The frame size is "medium." What the heck is that? I've tried to look for input on this but really come up with nothing. I am 5'11 and I have an inseam of 32". Can anyone give me some input on this.

As well, my choice of bikes is between a 2006 Stumpy and a 2009 Gary Fisher HiFi Deluxe. You can see them below. I'd appreciate any input on this as well.

Usually medium means the seat tube length is around 17-18 inches. Large means the seat tube is about 19-21 inches long. The seat tube is how frame size is measured, everything else goes off that size. You might want to look on the manufactures website for mare detailed frame sizes for a specfic model.

With you being 5'11" a medium frame would probably work for you. I'm 6'1" and I use a medium frame, but I like the way they handle better than larger frames.
mountain biking is not a crime, so quit giving me dirty looks before I bunnyhop your car

I'm 5' 10" and usually find I can ride either a med or large size frame. It really comes down to personal preference..

Also, you can check the geos on specialized archive pages:

This is for the 2006 SJ FSR but the HT is archived too
