29ers 2011 Epic Sworks, 2012 epic expert or trek superfly

    Hey there,

So I have these options. I could get the 2011 epic sworks for a great price about 2k difference between that and 2012 epic expert. Is the 2011 sworks worth the 2k? Is there a big improvement to the 2012? I haven't tried the stump jumper 29 tho is that something I should consider? Another option is the trek, family friends own a trek shop and swear by the Superfly.

    Thanks

How much can you get the s-works and expert for?(pm me if you don't want to post it) I would say go for the S-works
The wheels on the s-works which retail for 1700 are a huge upgrade over the expert then you have all the other benefits as well. 2000 over the cost of an expert is a no brainer. Are you sure the expert is still available, I checked a few days ago and was told November.

Definitely go with S-Works since it has carbon wheels and all XX components.

You 're kidding right? The S-Works fo ronly $2K difference is a complete no brainer. The Trek is a nice bike, but it ain't an Epic.

But I'm talking 2011 vs 2012. Was there any big changes? It's an '11 sworks and a '12 expert.

The 2012 Epic Expert has some nice upgrades over the 2011, like the SID fork, Formula brakes, and better wheels, but it still doesn't compare to a 2011 S-Works Epic. If you can afford the extra $2K, the S-Works is well worth it. The frame is all carbon, including the rear triangle, and a higher grade of carbon, the bike is lighter, the wheels are hugely better, the drivetrain is better, etc.

Another major difference between the two could be the performance of the Brain.
There is a new tune for 2012, but I am unsure if the new tune is a 2012 S-Works exclusive or it runs the entire range of Epics for 2012.

If there are no differences or minuscule differences, I like all the other posters would shell out the extra $2k for an '11 S-works over an '12 Expert

The main differences between the '11 and '12 S-Works Epic 29er is the SID fork and the Kashima coating on the rear shock. Carbon frames are the same, component groups are the same, and the wheels are identical. Supposedly the carbon rearend is stiffer but the '11 was insanely stiff for the average joe. I'd definitely go with the S-Works, Trek's might as well be sold @ Walmart.

Wheels are lighter and stronger, they are 40g lighter and 50 lbs higher rider limit.

If you have the slightest notion that you might like a Stumpy 29er, then you should try the new carbon Stumpy 29. The S-Works is 24 pounds tubeless without pedals. It climbs almost like an Epic, but drop the post on the downhills, and it shreds gnarly steep pitches. I ride mostly an Enduro, but the Stumpy 29 is almost as capable.
