    What's better a Spot or a Monocog?

Assume that, component-wise and price-wise, these bikes are similar. Which is a better ride/value?

Well that's not really a valid assumption to make - the Spot wins hands down on frame quality, though it's significantly more expensive. I believe a Spot frame would cost you more than a Monocog complete bike.

I prefer my MonoCog because, I can ride it downtown and lock it up outside the CJC err.... "Criminal Justice Complex" and not be too worried that it will not still be there when I come out... and if it's not, ohh well..... that's what home-owners insurance is for. I get a new one (w/ disc brakes this time;-)
The other day I came out to find the PACIFIC that was locked in the rack next to my MonoCog was stripped to the bare frame, and the Mono was not touched.

If I had a spot, it would not leave my garage except to go to Stanky Creek.

Thanks. I meant that assume each bike is built w/ similar components.

I didn't realize the spot was a more $$$ frame. What's the MSRP?

$750 - frame only, i.e. significantly more than the Redline retails for complete. The Monocog only takes a 110 rear hub as well, so it's almost impossible to spec them identically.

How on earth did you come to assume they were even remotely comparable?

I have no knowledge of either, that's why i'm asking.

I've found both for sale (used) at similar prices so I'm trying to figure what's the better deal. Sounds more and more like the spot.

sorry, I came across a little too aggressive Yes, buy the Spot, a much better deal assuming it's in proper shape.

    Check your prices

Assuming they have the same level of parts the Spot would be the way to go. Still, make sure it is the right size and that you don't overpay. If you don't know what bikes are worth I'd get a bit of education by looking at the classifieds here, or e-bay. The Redline for example is only about a $400-500 bike new, but someone may have upgraded it so that they have $1000-1500 in it. I can't imagine anyone building up a decent Spot for much under $1000, more likely it cost quite a bit more.
