Smile want to build my first SS, looking for a little advice

First off, Thanks in advance for any help.

I was given by a friend this frame....
    https://gallery.consumerreview.com/w...isguyframe.jpg
I'd like to build it into a SS but unsure if the Softride Beam is gonna be lame for a SS.
I rode a OG just like this one in the early 90's as a loner while my broken frame (Not a OG) was being replaced. I remember liking it except for really rocky climbs. I'd love to bring this one back to life.

I'm on a tight budget to build one up, so says the wife, getting a free frame helps save the dollars for better parts

Please tell me that it won't s*ck as a SS. Any input for parts and such would be really helpful. I've never been in the loop for SS stuff, so please excuse my little knowledge in this arena.

    Cheers.

    Rocks?!

Maybe I'm missing something but your link photo looks like a road bike to me. I ride those too, but am not qualified to suggest it's usefullness or suitability for SS. I do feel qualified to agree it would probably suck for rocky areas. Are you trying to build an SS cross bike? Check the FAQ section at the top of the page for a lot of good info on SS conversions and parts sources.

    Thnx Mattman,
It actually is a mtn frame. I want to turn it into a Mtn SS. It used to have the softride stem. The friend was gonna build it up a long time ago, as what I dunno, but the forks and such just came with the freebie frame...been hanging in his garage way too long. I know it's not the best option for SSing but free is free
    I'll check the FAQ's
    Cheers

    brakes??

    where are the brake mounts?

A buddy used to ride a Softride MTB but the steep descents were always sketchy, as the beam wanted to catapult him OTB. If it were mine I'd be looking at making it a fixie road/fun bike or some light off-road. Can't say I'd want it as my main SS, but that's me.

free is good though...make the most out of it and report back!

wow i can picture landing your ass hard on that seat unexpectedly and then being flung right off catapult style....

you could probably make a sweet commuter!! but if you do manage to make a rideable singlespeed more power to ya....

or, if you wanna cheap SS that will actually work as well as anything else out there

Bummer, Guess I'll make it a fun fixer. At least I have a project bike now.

I seem to remember that little issue now

When it's built I'll post pics.
    Cheers
