Trek Marlin SS or Specialized Rockhopper SS

Hey guys, looking to buy my first 29er single speed. I am deciding between a 2011 Trek Marlin for $475 or a 2011 Specialized Rockhopper for $900.

Each bike seems to fit fine. Does the rockhoppers slightly better shocks, eccentric bottom bracket and brakes justify double the price? Any major differences in the frames?

    Thanks for the help.

What are the specs on the Rockhopper? I thought the ss was only available as a frame.

It's a 2010, which I believe is the last year they offered the full bike.

    RockShox Tora S-Lite fork
    Alex RHD Rims
    Specialized FastTrak LK's tires
    Truvative FireX crank
    Juicy 3s SLs brakes
The cockpit is a mix of house brand parts

The Marlin is their bottom barrel lineup, probably comparable to the old Fisher Tahoe/Wahoo. I had one of both and every component needed replacing before long - the frames are capable, but the stock components are all crap. At that point, you're slowly building a new bike from scratch anyways and end up spending more than twice what the Marlin costs.

I would shop a good used frame or inexpensive decent new one. Scour ebay or local bike groups for a decent wheelset and build from there. You'd have a much more capable bike from the start.

The '08 and '09 Rockhopper's have sliding rear dropouts, no tensioner needed. Not sure about the '10's and newer. I am going to SS my '08 one these days.
