    Thumb shifter mods

    To all;

    I know! I know!
    It's a singlspeed post area!

There was a guy (online) who would modify thumb shifters to 9 speed

I have had a couple of inquires here in the shop about 1x9 set-ups

    Thanks

    I can do that

I'm not sure if I am who you are talking about, but I can do the modification. I designed a new part a few years ago and had a shop machine the parts for me. PM me if interested.

What type of shifters are you starting out with? Are they indexed? 7 Speed?

I am starting out with Shimano 7 speed thumbies, the best shifters ever!

    minus9:

I have Suntour and Shimano 7 and 8speeds. With the lesser avaliability of Sram for Twist shifters. I'm heading towards the old stuff.

Can you do mods to these?

    Thanks

No, you can not convert the shifters.

Would be easier (and better IMO) to set up the bikes as 1x7 or 1x8. The Derailleurs work fine. Just swap out the cassette.

Who says you can't convert the shifters? I converted a set of Shimano thumbies to 9 speed and rode them for a few years. That being said, I converted them back to 8 speed a little while ago, but then again all my MTB's are either SS or 8 speed now! I just find the 8 speed stuff less finicky, and parts are cheaper as well.

I think Shiggy was responding to my post about Srams 1:1 ratio. I don't think we can convert thumbies to Sram 1:1, but it is just a matter of the holes or dimples in the housing being redrilled to allow less space between shifts!

I will be carving stuff up tonight. Stop by and bring Pizza! aluminium will be flying

You are correct about that, I don't think you can convert any thumbshifters to work with the SRAM 1:1 stuff. As far as converting them from 8 speed to 9 speed for use with Shimano, I designed a new part that goes inside the shifter and has 9 dimples instead of 8 in the same amount of rotation.

One more thing: I would highly recommend making the part from steel and not aluminum. The steel ball in the shifter will wear through the aluminum in no time.
