Switching between SS and 1X11 / Can I use 9spd and 11spd chains?

I usually run SS but occasionally want to make it a 1X11.

I usually run the cheaper 8 or 9 speed chains for SS. The Shimano drivetrain will require the more expensive 11-speed chain. I'll be running a narrow wide chainring, most likely a Wolftooth.

Can I run the 8/9 chains when SS and the 11 speed chain when geared without causing any weird wear patterns on the chainring and chains?

Would be nice to save a few bucks on chains by only having to run the 11 speed chain when geared.

I am not a metals or chainring expert, but as long as both chains fit the chainring, which they should, I don't see why this would wear down the chainring teeth or cause any issues to the chains. I have run different chains on the same chainring, switched back to the other chain, and never had any issues.

As long as there isn't any excessive wear on the ring it should work fine.

I would like to do the same with a new build. What bike are you doing this with? I have a worn out Lynskey Ti SS and I'm looking for a lightweight geared 1x10/11 rigid that I can also use as a replacement for the Lynskey. Looks like your question was answered eh? PS I really would prefer sliders on it also if possible but that may put too many limitations.
Suicide by single speed. Work in progress.
