    smallest safe cog

    subject says it all really, 16t seems as low as people go

    i understand the reasons against it but is anyone here using a really small cog?

    any catastophic parts failures you would liek to mention?

    Check the Urban/DJ/Park board. Some of those riders use really small chainring/cog combos for better clearance.

    I'm in the middle of a conversion right now. And I'm getting a 16t with the kit. But thats just to "easy", so I will be going with a 14t. I'm gunna use a Rennon in push up mode, so I will have more chain wrap.

    ok currently i run 42:18 on my commuter which is a 2.33 ratio

    i have just parted ways with this bike and i am picking up a new one which is currently 32:18 -trying to work out the easiest way to change gearing from 'commute' to 'dirt' without having to break the chain every saturday morning

    i want to see what people think about 32:14 gearing which is a 2.28 ratio

    also thinking of a 32:13 combo so it is a bit faster on the road, will this be a chain destroyer?

    I doubt you can go from 18 to 13 in the back with the same length chain anyway, unless you are using a derailleur or Melvin as a tensioner.

    not even by playing with where the wheel sits in the dropout?

    Probably not, but you could use an extra few links of chain and another quick link to easily lengthen/shorten the chain. Or run double double.

    Use two chains, one for each gear combo, with masterlinks or SRAM PowerLinks. Quick and easy swap.

    i thought it would come to this. i guess i will have to outlay some cash on another chain, was hoping to be able to change things with what is already on the bike
