single speed switch on a old school bike

i have a ten speed reaghly that im trying to switch so a single commuter and i have a free wheel tool but it wont work because of the design of the free wheel is there some tool that there is to get the gears off it looks like i slits out of the metal the bike is was made in the late 60s or early 70s if that helps at all i was not sure if i should put it in tools or single speed i assumed here because most people switch them over if any one needs pics just tell me i take one

I haven't done it (Sheldon has). Get the LBS to pull off the old cassette. You might be able to screw on a freewheel at that point, but I'm going to guess you'll have to redish the wheel.
