Gear down slightly, slap on a shock (pref. with a lockout for climbs), and possibly a bashguard.

32-18 on a SC Chameleon w/ z-1, Sun Singletrack rims, avids, and bashguard. Other parts up to you but this thing takes a beating (but a bit tank-ish for a singlespeed at 28lbs)
Maybe I can convince the wife for a Spot frame for the ss.....

that's pretty much what i'm running....

except a 120mm black super air and 34:20. 32:18 was ok but a little steep with those heavy wheels & tires. lockout on the fork is definitely your friend!

i love the bike, though for a truer "freeride" setup my XL should be an L. as it stands now, it's pretty much perfect for "ugly xc."

Im just waiting on the frame to arrive but Im building a Chameleon for that exact reason. Medium frame to keep it tight, with a Sherman Firefly, Holzfeller cranks with guard and 32x18. The SC site has it under 27 lbs with a geared drivetrain but I can't imagine mine will be less than 27. The steelhead is a tank (frame is almost 3lbs heavier than the SC - shop scale).

I'm sure my Chameleon is over 30 lbs - extra-large, Minute One / Surly 1 x 1 rigid, 2.7 Mobsters (6 freaking lbs a pair!!), Ritchey hubs on 219s.... you get the idea. It sucks pushing it up, but it's a blast on the downhills. While I don't really consider myself a "freerider", it would stand up to sick amounts of abuse.

Do you already have the Evil? I ran into a guy on the W&OD a little while ago who had an Evil and he had pretty much all positive things to say. It's of course a little on the heavy side, but then again you don't want your frame to break if you miss a jump...
