    Single speed conversion help

Hey everyone I just set my specialized hardrock up as a singlespeed using a dmr chain tensioner. I have ridden it around my house and down some dirt road to test it out with no problems at all. Well I take it to my local trail today and the at the first hill I stand up to climb and "POW" my chain breaks. I didn't have the tension to tight I don't think. Any ideas where I went wrong?

What chain did you use? Did you use the quick link that came with the chain? I think with a broken chain it could be multiple things...

It's a 9 speed sram pc 991 chain. I removed the quick link to avoid a weak spot

check your chain line. if that is off it can break the chain. also, make sure the chain is loose enough that when you backpedal there is no resistance but tight enough that it will not hop off.

    What did you use instead?
A quick link has never failed me - but a pin joint by me has. So has a pin joint by a pro mech who usually gets things right.

I just took enough links out to join it without the quick link. That may be the problem. I think that's where it failed kinda hard to tell though

You joined it with a used pin from the chain?
You should not do that. It is a pretty sure way to create a weak spot.
