shims for a 25.4 handlebar? would it be stronger?

    hi all

the "mary almost sent me to the ER" post got me thinking. i've got an existing 31.8mm stem, but i found a sweet deal on a 25.4mm handlebar, and i'm frugal. i don't want to replace my perfectly-good stem if i don't have to. so....

....does anyone know if there are shims i could use to make this work?

....plus, wouldn't a shim theoretically make the handlebar stronger increase it's lifespan a bit (iow, keep it from snapping at the stem clamp a bit longer)?

    many thanks,

    nick

universal cycles has them and I have been using shims before with no problems ( I used bmx 22.2mm handlebars with my 25.4mm stem ). You may want to trim the shims if you find it too wide.
everything sucks but my vacuum cleaner.
