I did a cross race a couple weeks ago on my mtb, and I ran 33x16 for about a 60" gear. For a road ride I'd think you'd want something at least a little bigger, for instance I run a 70" gear on my fixed.

I rode a 32 16T for a year as a commuting/training bike. It is a really good all around gear but you will spin out on flats and strain to keep going if the hills are really steep and long. I changed it to a 15T and it was much better.

I ran 69GI on my SS road bike for rolling MD hilliness. Since you've got fat tires to push, maybe 65GI would work--that's about a 14t cog for you. Then again I don't know where the **** you live and I'm too lazy to look at your user profile. Paradoxically, I wasn't too lazy to calculate the gear inches of a 29er running 32x14.

I just used a 42t ring off of my geared bike and didn't have an issue. I have been using 42x20 and 42x22
