    Properly Lubed?

This evening I met up with the infamous sParty for Angry Tuesday, which largely consists of the day being Tuesday and us, somewhere along the ride, being angry we chose to ride the route.

Anywho, before we mounted our respective ass sleds, Sparty, aka Smarticus, did the strangest thing I ever saw a man do. He lubed the outside of the chain. It hit me harder than an asian carp hits a water-skier. I lube the inside of the chain, as I figure the act of pedaling will move the lubrication through the entirety of the chain, rather than spraying right off again.

Naturally, I immediately came the the conclusion that sMarty is a little more retarded than his comments let on.

But somewhere on the ride, right before I got angry with our decision to ride steep hills, I realized that Sparticus, in fact, has been riding mountain bikes longer than I've been alive. Not only that, but because of his advanced age, has a much more complete understanding of lubrication because his "intimate relations" absolutely require it.

So who is doing it right? Sparticus, the Moses of the SS forum, or me, the Joseph Smith (because polygamy is awesome, especially if you aren't married) of the SS forum?

Also, I was looking for a SS crank...

    Maybe a self-oiling ss crank..

If you lived some place dry and dusty lubing the outer plates of you chain would just attract dirt. Living someplace wet, I can't see it hurting.

    I lube the rollers.

i use clear silicone spray (aerosol) and hit the entire chain with it. just spin the cranks and spray. i'm probably doing it wrong, but i'll tell you that i'm doing it right.

seriously though, it works for me and i find the dirt doesn't stick to the chain as much with silicone spray (compared to chain lube).

I lube the rollers on the inside -- the working side -- where they make contact with the teeth of the cog/chain ring. Centrifugal force will move the lube to the outside of the chain. To my little brain, besides perhaps combating rust, I don't see why one would bother lubing that side of the chain, it doesn't make sense.

I only use orgianic loobs. When you find a dead animal to huck, make sure you gunk your chain up with animal fat like this...

(Picture of Aquaholic, stolen from another thread. Props for the huck.)

Up to two bad ideas. Two too many.

This is why I post. For the knowledge. Thanks for dropping the dimes, yo.
