    Please Excuse the Extreme Stupidity

Is there any sort of bad juju that can come from running a geared hub with a single speed spacer kit on a bike with track ends. For example a surly 1x1 with a geared. wheel set.

To me it seems that the extra tension needed to take the slack out of the chain would be more tension than the cassette body and bearings were originally designed to take.

    Thank You in advance

A few years ago I ran a 1x1 with a QR in a 24 hour solo race. No problems.

Used a couple of thin chain tensioners (tugnuts in USA) on the inside of the dropouts.
As little bike as possible, as silent as possible.

Nope, not a problem. In fact there are many great dedicated SS hubs that use the same freehub design just with a shorter freehub body that doesn't fit a full cassette (Chris King, DT Swiss, Hope, Hadley, etc)

Do you think this tension is anywhere near the tension that pedaling a 22 x 34 generates?

Yeah man, no worries there. I had an old XT 756 set that I swapped a solid axle into and ran track nuts on my 1x1. Other times I ran a QR in an XT with a tuggnut (drive side tuggnut ony) and I now run a "geared hub" DT240s in my Jabberwocky frame with an RWS. All good.

Just don't get the chain too tight, it needs to be ever-so-slightly floppy so it is not binding. Your chainring and cog are not perfectly round, so make sure the tightest part of the pedal rotation is not stressing on the cassette. The same approach would apply to a freewheel though.

It is actually good Juju. :-) The 1x1 craves funky setups.
