    Parks... (x-post)

or my first SS group ride ever.

In the middle of last week I got an email from my buddy Tom, who was trying to organize an SS ride over in McCormick. The route is one of the standard long days over there, and I've done it before, most recently last winter. There's some photos here showing what a sloppy mess that winter ride was. Things weren't looking any better this time. We were slated to camp at the state park Friday night, then hit the trail around 9:30, but Friday was just one thunderstorm after another so we bailed on the camping.

Saturday arrived nice and sunny though, and I got there at the appointed time. So did Tom. Ernest was late and everyone else was a no-show at the start. The route is start at one State Park with about 4 miles of its loop. Hit pavement and ride 8 miles to the other park. Do everything there twice, then come back and finish up the first park. Its a nice ride with friends to make the road miles pass. We picked up another pair of riders, Jeff and Sean, just when we were getting started at the second park, and Ernest had to bail early, but all in all it was a good day.

Ernest had the dirtiest, greasiest, gunkiest chain I think I've ever seen. He dropped it twice. Here Tom's putting it back on. Turn about is fair play and Ernest had changed a tire for Tom earlier.

We didn't stop for many pics, but I did make Tom and Ernest ride this little step a couple of times since I rarely get the opportunity to photograph othe people riding. Of course I blew the timing both times.

    Tom:

    Ernest:

Tom insisted that I needed my pic taken as well, and of course he nailed it. Crap.

Then we ran into Jeff and his son Sean, who were looking for us. Sean is 15 years old and was tearing it up. He's got the skills, and when he builds his endurance he'll be the complete package. The 30 miles he did Saturday was a bit much though. Especially running a 2:1. Here he is in the middle.

And his dad Jeff a second or two later. Jeff was riding a Rig, the first I've seen in the wild.

Shuttling to the other park. Its a lot easier in a pace line than alone.

And some random shots from the day.

Jeff looking like he just swallowed a bug.

The most interesting frame of the day.

roadie jerseys? That's what caught your attention? I'm noticing the pace line, not very conducive to a good-natured, bsing, pass the flask, ss ride....

Oh c'mon, we were running 15, maybe 16 mph. You need a paceline at speeds like that. It was brutal. One minute pulls and it was drift back and recover time.....

That's the sausage effect. Really there is zero body fat in any of those pics. Honest.
