    Options for Overdriving

I'm looking for ways to overdrive on long stretches (half-mile) of flats in loop races where spinning 180 rpm will exhaust me and dinglespeeding is too slow an option. Hammerschmidts are also not an option as they don't work on my frames.

Do I relent and go to gears and shifters?

Or if I don't go gears all the way, does it make sense to go 2x1 and put 2 chainrings, an FD, and a tensioner at the back? Will it even work? Will the tensioner actually take up a lot of slack in the chain like a RD?

    Or a RD with 1 chainring and 2 cogs for a 1x2?

I'm leaning towards 2 chainrings and FD for less friction and closer to an SS feeling, but I'm not sure it works. (I'm tensioning my chain with a slot dropout so I have no experience with tensioners.) What are the pros and cons of each method? Or are there other methods I don't know of?

This belongs in the drivetrain forum, not the singlespeed forum.

Just gear your bike higher and walk some of the hills.

You're right, it does. Will post there, too. But perhaps SSers may have some unique and useful insight or some clever fix as they may have encountered this issue before. And only those who have ridden SS will understand the less friction feeling of a rear dérailleurless drivetrain.
