I assume you mean hardtails and not FS singlespeeds, right?

Hardtail for sure, I'd say. Not many out there chumbox (I certainly can't think of any). I'd say get the frame of your choice and go from there.

Loving my Specialized Carve Pro 29 SS (takes an 80mm fork)

    I see hills.

    I want to climb them.

i have been out of loop for couple years so i am certain there are many more, but if you "must" have an off the shelf, here are some thoughts. having said that, call somebody like chad at red barn bikes and create you own off the shelf bike...just a thought and its not necessarily even more coin

Thanks chumbox. Got it from Streamline Cycles in FTG, for around $500 for the frame (RRP is $599). Fork, bars, seatpost, seat, brakes were all new (online purchases except the brakes), the rest carried over from the last bike.

Spec makes completes as well. This ones a '10 rockhopper that I got a good deal on as NOS. On their website now, the only one I could find was a stumpy that was far more expensive. You might be able to find some NOS around you... I just picked this one up last fall.

I bought a 2011 Trek Marlin SS 29er for 450$ from my local trek superstore. It comes with a cheap fork but it was worth the extra $$ over a nashbar or redline monocog because I get to harass them if it breaks and it's a lot better than a rigid bike as far as comfort goes. The fork is cheap but it locks out totally solid which is a bonus for climbing. The frame is also identical to the 1,500$ trek rig they sell so if I wanna spend a little more money I could upgrade the bike for less than the complete build. The G2 geometry is pretty awesome. I lined my buddies santa cruz nomad size medium wheel to wheel next to my medium sized marlin and they had nearly the exact same wheel base. It handles nice and tight!!!!!!!!!
