    Noisy ACS Claws

My ACS Claws freewheel makes a knock, knock, knock, knock sound when I pedal. If I coast a bit and then pedal I can find a quiet zone. What is going on here?

I have had the same problem with those. Personally, I think it is just cuz they are cheap. It sure would be nice to have a definate answer though.

That is the infamous "Claws Knock". I have yet to have one that does not develop it with use. It can be postponed if you soak the new FW in synthetic motor oil BEFORE you use it. Soaking a used FW will quiet it for a while.
Do not know what causes the noise. Have not had one fail.

The trouble with common sense is it is no longer common

Yeah, I have a Shimano freewheel and the pulley of my chain tensioner makes more noise than that freewheel.

Thats funny I just put a Shimano on mine and had removed the ACS and the Shimano is very quiet, most people on this board said the ACS was a better freewheel but maybe not?

No way, as soon as I replaced my shizmano with a ACS I posted how unhappy I was that my nice silent KM now made noise when ever I coasted and sometimes when spinning.
It's a shame, no chainslap and no noise was one of the beautiful things about SS.
Now that I have settled on the 20t it's time to spring for the eno that gets the rave reviews.

    Knock Knock...

I believe that knock may come from side-to-side play in the freewheel.

Wiggle your freewheel side to side, and if there's much play, this may be your problem. You can take the play out by disassembling the freewheel (lots and lots of little bearings) and removing a shim. THere's usually 2 or more shims in there.

It's a pain in the A$$, but if you're a gear-nerd, and you have beer on hand, you might even get some kind of wierd pleasure out of it.

Or you could just spring $10 for a new one.

    Have fun.
