    New SS Build: Crank Help

I'm going to try my hand at some SS racing this season and in building up a new frame set as a treat to myself. The only component that will not be coming over from my current bike is the crankset. I'm looking to upgrade. I'm considering the new 9000 series XTR 1x crankset. Is there any reason this would not make a reliable SS specific crank? If it's not a worth crank are there any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

It would probably work, but I personally wouldn't use it because it has a funky BCD (bolt circle diameter). A better choice would be an XT or SLX triple 10 speed crankset that uses a 104mm BCD. There are tons of choices for chainrings with that bolt pattern. Just sell the stock chainrings on Ebay and buy a single speed chainring and some shorter chainring bolts. This is usually more cost effective than trying to buy a 1x crankset plus you get to pick your own chainring tooth count (and color if you want bling). A triple works better than a double due to the chainline optimization around the middle ring.

I like my XO cranks. The spiderless design is nice with more selection than ever, and you can go as small as you'd like.

SS cranks? The first set of cranks I had came on my first SS. They still work (going on a new build for my son) but they're a little heavy. The next set I bought off a friend of mine (new take-offs) are Raceface cranks, much lighter, they also do the job. What I'm getting at is, any reliable crankset will work. I like the Shimano triple suggestion just for the reason it's recommended - so many 104 options out there.

i would check out a direct mount crank. Raceface cinch system makes a lot of sense to me. very versatile crank, it can do just about anything you want.
