My Monocog headset is going "crunch, crunch, crunch"

Hey y'all! Got my Redline Flight Monocog 26" a while back, and while
it's a blast to ride, ever since I got it, the headset (a Ritchey threadless) has made these "crunch, crunch, crunch" noises that no matter what I do, it keeps coming back. Anyway, I'm guessing it's time to replace it, so I'm asking the experts(you all) what options are there.

    Captain Obvious, reporting for duty.

By everything, does that include cracking it open and cleaning up the bearing? Even if it's not dirt dirt, it might be some metal shavings, or something like that. How long is a while?

Monocogs come with crappy headsets. If totally cleaning it and regreasing it and it's still crappy, I recommend a Cane Creek headset. I really like the S6 I have. Stainless sealed cartridge bearings and lots of neoprene seals elsewhere. Usually around $30-40.

    Are they really that bad?

Greasing should shut it up for some measurable amount of time, otherwise it's got something in it.

Cane Creek S2, or FSA Pig....much better headsets than what you've got, don't cost a lot. Why dick around?

My 29er came with a Cane Creek Headset. The skewer really sucks, comes loose all the time.

My Cane Creek on my Raleigh has been great.

It's lived through Fully rigid SS DH. Yeah. Don't try it, it doesn't work.

yep, had to replace mine two months ago after owning the bike for 3 months. I couldn't stand the noise and movement not to mention its a little dangerous. Replaced it with a cane creek s-3.
