    Mavic 519 vs. Mavic 521?

    Hi,

My new singlespeed (04 Kona Unit) is on the way and I need to build some wheels. I currently have some 521s on a more FR-ish hardtail, which have been perfect. I probably won't be running much larger than 2.3s, but if I go rigid, I may try out a 2.6 up front.

    Thanks.

I had some 519's built up with King hubs and they have been great on my rigid SS for over a year and a half. I am 230lbs and I find them to be bomb proof. Another good choice are the Velocity Aeroheats and about the same weight 465m. I have those on my FS bike and they are nice too.

    I built a set of 519's

    I am happy with them
a good wheel builder is more important than rim choice.
I have been running 517/surly for about three years with good results with a 2.5 on the front.
    I've been inside too long.

Wheelbuilder will be me -- so we'll see how that will go. Thinking of taking the plunge and building them myself.

So far, unamious votes for the 519?

    519 weigh 460 grams
    521 weigh 590 grams
More weight stronger rim, How much strength do you need? Thats the question that you must answer.

Hard to see, the future is....

An XC bike, the Unit is. But small be the difference, when one uses The Force to compare built wheels. Does the prodigal son/daughter have a price list/budget? The deciding factor, that may be.
    Ride.
