    Magic Gear Help? Noob alert.

I'm trying to figure out the right gearing to use so that I won't need a chain tensioner or half link on my SS. It's an old Trek 850 that I've been using for pavement cruising. Originally I used it at 44x18 which required no tensioner and I now run at 40x18 which I use with a half link. I want to turn my street beater into my winter trail beater so I'm looking for a smaller front chainring to run with my 18t cog in the rear. I tried using http://eehouse.org/fixin/formfmu.php but I'm dumb and can't figure out what exactly I'm looking at. Can anyone give me a hand?

Notes: I'll be using this primarily for climbing muddy trails this winter. Street slicks going bye bye for some knobbies.

Measure your chainstay, plug in numbers and the ratios that show up in or near the dark line down the middle *should* work.
