M952 vs Race Face turbine (square taper) cranks......

    Curious.......

Is either better suited for SS applications? I'm building a SS and a geared bike and trying to decide which would be better for either application. Since they both have a narrow profile I think "visually" they both flow better with the narrower tubes on a steel frame.

    Thoughts? Opinions? Experiences? Preferences?

I should add that I do have a five bolt spider for the 952 cranks.

    Check with Homebrew Components
    http://www.homebrewedcomponents.com/...ess-chainrings

for a spiderless single speed chainring using your Shimano cranks. That should save the "hassle" and weight of single speed chainring bolts, not to mention the spider.

I like Turbines from an aesthetic perspective.

I'd do spiderless if I had a crank I wanted to do that with, especially if the chainring is from ISAR.

i own both, and they are both pretty. like uMarty and 29 said, HBC spiderless is the way to go with the XTR or check the other thread about the titanium chainring. if they can copy a spiderless boone, that will be on my #1 list aesthetically.

I love my XTRs with HBC spiderless. Great setup. Super narrow Q if you use the Ultegra double 109.5mm bottom bracket.

Remember that the chainring bolts are structural on RF Turbines. You need to install some bolts in the granny position even if there is no ring there.

    @ 29 / Fishcreek / Umarth / Pimpbot

Thanks guys. The spiderless 952 option does seem to be the cleanest looking and I'm a true believer in fewer moving parts....then why am I building a geared bike too?!?! Unfortunately that gives me more ideas on how to spend money

    @ Pimpbot

I would be running the the Turbines as a double so thanks for the education! I was completely unaware of that fact.

HBC's to the Spot and Jericho of old that I use to run? Had to switch to using a spider awhile ago when they wore out and would love to get 'less' again. Boone is not in my budget.

As for narrower Q factor, I've had to use the Ultegra 118 bb to clear the chain stays using them on the VooDoo, which kinda negates that, but still is a great setup.

I thought about going with a spiderless setup for the better half's bike, but (looks over shoulder) my cranks are five bolt.

I believe spiderless will be the way to go. Now to decide between red and black. Hmmmmm......

I've been running my turbines for about twelve years without granny bolts and they haven't exploded yet, but maybe I'm just lucky.
