    Kona Kilauea budget SS build

Hey guys. I'm slowly building up the old frame that got me hooked on mountain biking, a '98 Kona Kilauea (Reynolds 631 steel). I'm trying to decide the cheapest way to convert it to SS. Performance has a Forte kit for $30, but I dunno if it's a better idea to get a spacer kit and go with the Surly Singleator or not. Thoughts?

As long as you're using a cassette hub as opposed to a thread on freewheel you'll have to get a spacer kit either way. The forte kit or the singulator are tensioners. You could measure your chainstays and use the magic gear calculator to check and see if any certain ratio might work without a tensioner. Good Luck! And that's quite the wiggly seatpost.

My brother used a Frote kit for his SS build a few years ago and it's still going strong.
Authorities speculate that speed may have been a factor. They are also holding gravity and inertia for questioning.

The standard 32-16 singlespeed gear works with no tensioner (i.e. it's the "magic gear") on that frame. At least it does on my '97 Kilauea (Columbus tubing, same socket dropouts). However, I can't remember if I needed a half-link or not. Great bike. First post.
