    Heroes, Freaks and other Inspirations...

there have been a few guys in the forefront lately that make me want to consider putting training wheels back on my bike. One minute I'm a capable cyclist, the next I'm hearing their tales and feel like that guy you see riding in the park on Sunday, trying to figure out the kickstand on his new Wal-Mart bike.

seriously, here are some dudes that defy logic, don't seem to comprehend pain or limits and are also just really cool guys to have around in our sport. Watching them usually results in the shaking of ones head or the uttering of "No way..." or "WTF" combined with a look of total confusion.

Alex in AZ. I first saw pics of him from last years AZSF, riding his rigid Santa Cruz SS, with Hawaiian shorts, a skate helmet, flat pedals and slip-on checkerboard Vans. From what I gather he also races downhill events on it and beats the big-bike boys at their own game. Rad.

Calvin in SoCal. Wins the 52 mile Vision Quest 2 yrs. in a row on a SS, so decides to run it this year, beating some cyclists. Here's Calvin on his fixie, headed towards mile 100 in Palm Springs.

Rudy in AZ (aka Burnin' Love). 24 hrs. solo on a fixed gear SS. In a pink bunny suit. Great for the ego.

Hurl @ CarsRCoffins. Rode his Surly SS for 9 weeks across SE Asia and lived to write about it.

    You inspire me, HW

When a flacid slacker like you comes out and hangs with us old farts in the great white north (namely @BC), you know you got it goin', dude.

I totally agree with you about Alex. He is simply amazing. I must have watched him 20 times on Pete's video last year ripping lines down the Waterfall. And who was it that said maybe a rigid hardtail was holding back one's ability? Total bullshit...]

    Alex is beyond sick.

BTW: He did a century on a BMX bike "because he could"...and no, he's not pretentious about it at all....most unassuming guy you'd ever want to meet.

And that line on milagrosa he's doing in the pic? There about 3 out of like 20 people on that ride that did it.

It is all about Skills....baby, skills.....

These guys are very inspiring, motivating and talented. Their skills have always left me on the side line, mouth open, slack jawed and drooling.

I excell at falling down, OTB, and jumping off the bike at exactly the right moment to protect the "BOYS".

Sparty is correct... I am a poser.....

I never said that! And if I did you know it was in jest! Or caused by my outright confusion! Okay, make that my outright stupidity...

This reminds me of the title of the ol' country song, "How Could You Believe Me When I Told You That I Loved You When You Know I've Been A Liar All My Life?"

    Sheesh!

    Just Kidding Sparty.....

That was some self inflicted jesting.

Although.... I look pretty good riding the PISSOFF down to Micky D's for a few burgers.....

I never meant the poser statement to be real... more surreal... Forgive me.

    rad post Jeff

Awesome post, really cool to see the guys that don't say it but still carry the message: "why the hell would you sit on the couch and not ride?"

    thanks for the fix,
    b.

He's done the Flight of the Pigs and the MS 150 on a BMX bike. Just for something to do.

I have a folder of pics on my computer called Alex Rides.

It's funny, I've never felt the need to be 'extreme' or push any boundaries or wear a pink bunny suit or ride around naked. Naturally, that doesn't mean I don't appreciate those that do - what I don't appreciate is those that feel the need to be outgoing because their momma didn't give them enough attention as a child. THAT pisses me off. The 'Extreme Generation' also piss me off with their 'Going big is advancing the sport' mentality, which is meaningless and devoid of anything 'big picture'.

I guess everyone that rides inspires and impresses me. Humble people who are true to themselves and ride because it's good, ride because it's fun, and ride because ultimately the simple contraption that we call a bike might just save us one day.

Like a lot of you, I look up to those people that are fitter, more driven, and have abilities that outstrip my own - but the things that impress me are still very basic, meaningful things. People that don't own cars and ride their fixies all 'round town. People that help others fix their bike. People that give the newbie a raucous cheer when he finally catches up to the bunch. People that give away half their powerbar when someone else needs it more than they do.

At the end of the day, any one of us can go riding in SE Asia, ride downhill on a rigid bike *gasp*, ride a fixie for 100 miles and do so wearing a Kaftan - but not all of us can be good ambasadors for the human race.

    Here endeth the Sermon.
No longer member of the bike industry nor society, so don't hassle me.
