Help me find my next bike - Transition TransAM

I spent $450 a year ago on a used Raleigh XXIX, that my wife now enjoys. It is too big (Size M 18") and not what I want.

I started mountain biking last summer so I am still have a lot to learn.

I really like the look and purpose of the Transition TransAM, but I am too tight to throw $2400 at it.

I would love to find a used one, but they haven't been out long so I don't see that happening.

What would be the cheapest alternative to this?

    Desires:

New or Used (prefer the deal)
    All Mountainish
    singlespeed
    26"
    climbs well enough
decent for XC trails (to get to the downhills)
jumps real well (I am a noob so I don't see this progressing to 5' stuff for awhile)
strong frame with the slack angles, but still climbs
    strong wheelset
corners (think bobsled run for you Salt lickers - someday the jumps too)
    light front shock
    hardtail
EBB or track ends (no tensioner)
    steel frame, unless explain otherwise
disc prefered, but I can be talked into V's

I don't have a work shop and I would like to ride this thing soon, so if a piece build would have to have readily available parts at decent prices.

Potential condidates, that I am having a hard time finding anyways:
    Chameleon - Aluminum Frame
Monocog - Only seem to be 29ers, frame is a little more XC than I want.

Thanks in advance for the replies.

I am 5'8" 175lbs - probably 17" frame if anyone has a specific bike in mind.

Thank you for the replies and suggestions.

Since the majority of the cost is in the build kit is it worth getting a different frame?

$569 doesn't seem like a whole lot for a new TransAM frame since I can't get it anywhere else. I guess a savings here of a few hundred bucks for a used Inbred, Cotic, Chumba, etc... but will I regret not getting the frame I like (to look at - since I haven't ridden it yet)?

$659 for a PIKE shock is a bit high, and I can probably risk getting a used shock somewhere for less?

$1009 for the single speed build kit is actually a deal if compared to current internet pricing... used is another story.

    Rough estimates.

    1260 Total

What parts do you think I could get away with downgrading?

What would you not buy used?

Good god this crap is addictive. I thought $450 for the XXIX was a lot.

I feel like it doesn't really matter which bike I get, if I want a quality jumper with a shock it is gonna cost $2k?
