.....with an ulterior motive. I'll get her hooked on the short jaunt to the store and hopefully it won't be long before she's regularly using the hard stuff.

If that doesn't do it, nothing will. Sweet lookin' ride. How are you tensioning the chain on that bad girl?

It's "adequate" right now, at least for the purpose of making sure that the current gearing is going to be OK. If that proves to be the case I'll just replace the worn chain that's on there now with a new one & that should do the trick. As much as I'd like to pretend otherwise, this bike will be lucky to see 100 miles a year so that should be a relatively good solution. Based on what I've got right now if I have to lower the gearing I'll just go two teeth bigger on the cog and add a half-link.
I'm glad that this bike ended up having "magic" chainstays. I used to own a Convert, but it disappeared when some scabby tweaker pinched my grocery getter, an '83 Stumpy that I had converted to SS. He also got the first set of wheels I ever built in the bargain, some absolutely bombproof Ambrosio Durex rims laced 14g 3x to the original Specialized hubs. No, I'm not over it yet.......
