And some time to kill. Had a little fun this evening installing some Rivnuts on the underside of the downtube to add a third bottle cage.

How do you stop the inserts from just pulling out again?

Rivnuts are essentially just threaded rivets. The upper part compresses vertically and expands laterally inside the tube. You can buy a gun to set them for $20+, or use a longish bolt in combination with a nut and some washers to do it for less than a buck.

    Please explain Mr. Rivnut

How do you get the nut that you use to compress the rivnut into and out of the tube? My old fixie needs a cage. Where do you get them?

Bike Tools Etc. (Thanks to Aosty who did this to his Dean)

search for rivnuts, they also have drill bits, etc. both alum and steel nuts.

the bolt that I used to compress them is just a longer version of a bottle cage bolt. it just uses the threads. spin it in with a nut on it, and then hold it still while you back the nut down onto the frame, compressing the rivnut. Took 1/2 hour tops. you can google rivnuts (or rivnut tool, etc.) for lots of install tips and home made tools as well.
