    good bottom bracket for SS?

I feel like my BB gets more stressed out than the average one because I put so much lateral pressure on it as a SS rider. ...and my bottom bracket happens to be shot. Any suggestions for a tough one that won't break the bank? I ride a Kona Unit.

How long did your stock one last? Why not just replace it with OEM?

Looking at the DH cranksets, they all appear to use the same external BB as their mountain bike counterparts. Looking at the general shimano cranks, they all use hollowteck II, SRAM uses GXP, FSA has MegaExo. Unless you wanted to take a step back in time and get a square taper, I'd just replace it and ride.

The current one is an "FSA MegaExo." It started creaking the month I bought it. Finally appears dead 3 years later. I should've replaced it long ago, but never had the spare cash. I really don't know anything about bottom brackets or the different types... but I do have the tools to fix it myself.

    PS-edit-cranks are FSA too.

Honestly, I"d just throw a megaexo back into it. $40 instead of the unknown $ to get a new crankset (unless you grab one of the deore cranksets off jenson for $50, but they creak too). make sure it's properly greased on the threads and it's torqued down correctly.

Shimano XT for 20 USD. Fits the FSA Comet crankset you have on the Unit.

this man^^^^^^^^^is smart. listen to him. NOTHING wrong with the stock unit bb. creaking a month in? coulda been a number of things. or if it was the bb, shoulda just torqued it down to spec or better yet, wicked hard.

OK, thanks ya'll. I like that price range... that leaves me some $ to deal with the stock disk brakes, which need to be dealt with as well. Sigh.
