    Gearing Selection

In preperation for going single speed I've been running my geared bike with only a 36 front ring and 8 speed cassette on the rear. I have limited myself to using just one cog on the back as much as possible, and I have found that I am using either 18 or 21.

On the tracks I'm riding there are some hills that I can't make in 18. 18 is also not so good for very bumpy tracks when I have to coast now and again as it can be a bit slow to get going. 21 spins out on the flat quite easily though.

I'm soon going to be ordering a new 1x1 frame set and based on the above info, need some advice on what gearing to go for. I want to use a 32 or 34 front ring and I guess I need a cog on the back that will put my inbetween the current ratio I have been using on the geared bike. What would this be?

    Many thanks,

    JP1

    36x18 and 36x21 would be similar to 34x17 and 34x19 or 32x16 and 32x18

34x18 or 32x17 might be a good place for you to start as both are in between the gears you've been riding in.
