    Gearing, chain & cog questions

I am trying the single speed thing with my 29er Voodoo Dambala.

I am using a Shimano cassette with spacers and a 21 tooth rear hyperglide cog, 38 tooth front ring (no pins or ramps) and a nine speed chain.
Last night I went for a ride and had the chain pop off twice. I tightened it some and got it to stay on the rest of the ride.

Should I go to a BMX rear cog and a wider chain? I am a little tentative now in standing and grinding out a climb for fear of the chain coming off.

I like using the hyperglide cogs because I have about 20 to 30 hanging on my wall. Any success stories using hyperglide cogs?

Thanks in advance for your help. BTW I did read the FAQ section.

I tried the same thing and it just didn't work. I think that everyone else will tell you the same thing. I bit the bullet and built a dedicated SS wheel with a freewheel and haven't regretted it, but the cheaper option would be for you just to get a new SS cog - I think there are plenty out there that will still let you use a narrow chain.
