Fork upgrade for Specialized Carve SL SS

Fork upgrade for Specialized Carve SL 29er SS; currently have a rigid carbon fiber fork. I am wanting to put a 100mm travel fork on it to change in between the two. Any recommendations? I will be using the bike for XC trail riding with no more than 3 ft drops. Id like to spend around 400$. Thanks in advance

Not sure on pricing in your neck of the woods, but I would strongly recommend the X-Fusion Slide

I picked up the X-Fusion Slide for $296 delivered. Great reviews and my choice for my SS build.

I put a RockShox SID RCT3 120mm on mine and loved it! I felt the slightly higher front end helped slacken the geometry a little bit and it handled great! The SID is also one of the lightest forks you will find. Let me know if you have any specific questions!

Paid Spam: I am actually selling the fork after only 5 rides because I sold the frame to get a more all mountain frame to SS. Let me know if you'd be interested...

The only problem is the geometry on the bike. I really dont know what would fit well/ go well with the bike

The geo is very xc, that is where a 120mm fork would make it less twitchy. The stock carbon fork is supposed to be a 100mm sagged fork if I'm not mistaken, but it makes the front end sit very low.

I have the "older" Carve Pro 29 SS frame (designed around an 80mm fork). I am running a Slide at 100mm and the geo/handling is fantastic. A friend has just put a Slide at 120mm on the "newer" Carve (designed around an 100mm fork), and the handling is much the same.

Far more relaxed and trail oriented.

Ya, mine is the 2012 model. So the 120mm Slide would fit well and not cause any problems?

Ok, because I'd rather not pay for a 400$ fork, then have to return it because the geometries were all jacked up

Well, it works for me. If you are that concerned, see if you can measure things up and figure out what it would be and if you think it would work for you. Even have a chat to your LBS and see if they could sit you on a bike with similar geos.

Sadly, as with most things, if you want to mix things up, it comes with a slight risk that it might not work for you.

It could well do. Compare the A2C of the two forks and check.

The Slide is internally adjustable from 80, 100, 120mm.

Sorry to dig up an older threadů
Those of you running sus forks on your Carves, what crown race are you running? I can't figure out which one I am supposed to get. I am interested in both tapered and one that would allow me to use a straight steerer.

I'm running a 100mm Manitou Marvel Expert. Geometry feels really similar to the stock fork. Also, the lockout is rock solid unlike most Rock Shox that I have owned. However, if you wish to use a remote it is somewhat of a compromise. There is not enough throw to get it where you can run both fully open or locked out. You have to run it either on the stiff or softer side of the scale depending on how you choose to set it up.

I am looking at a similar fork Flat Ark, but I need to know which crown race to put on it. FSA has a couple and I don't know which to get.

Also, I plan to possibly rig a grip-shift lock outů. :-)

Have you ever seen a lockout set up with a grip shifter? I can see how it would work but not sure if it would give much more cable actuation? Could be completely wrong though!

There are threads on it here. Apparently both give about 20mm of cable pull. If I do it I will put a thread up on it.
