    Does size really matter?

    I currently run a 15G crankset with a 34/16 gear combo. I was given one of those stupid FSA K-Force light cranksets with the 4-bolt 94 BCD that you cannot get chainrings for. I tried it on my geared race bike but do not like the gearing and prefer the 3x9 crankset that I have. My question is: What are the pros and cons of running a 29/14 vs a 42/20 which are the chainrings I have and give similar gear inches. Also bear in mind that the 29 is an inner ring whereas the 42 is an outer ring which is ramped and pinned.

    Surly has an interesting blog post on this. Generally it's better to run bigger gears, you're less likely to have the chain jump or break because of the dynamics and torque of big rings vs. small. Also, "micro-drive" type setups will tend to wear out quicker.

    One thing you want to keep in mind for longer chain life is keeping the gearing even, example 36/18 instead of 29/14. The chain will wear quicker because of the odd number of teeth.

    Yea, i choose my gear inches based on chain life, not based on terrain or ability. I also run solid rubber tires so i don't get flats. I save $30 a year on tubes, totally worth the extra weight and shitty handling.

    The 29-14 will be fine for now, but isn't ideal. It's really not going to hurt much, aside from some slightly faster component wear. Not enough to stress about, IMO. I'd shop around for a new crank and sell that one.

    Would be really cool if I could find someone who could make me a 34t 94 bcd 4-bolt chainring Sorry. I know it is not on your website but it was worth a try!!!!!
