    crank question

Guy at work gave me an older mountain bike and I am tearing it down to build a SS. The front gears are riveted on. Can I drill them out and use the middle gear or bolt on a new ring?

I think if you drill it out that will be the end of the chainring set. A new set of Shimano LX are about $79 on jensonusa.com

Grind off the teeth on the outer ring and u got yourself a bashguard. Do whatever is neccessary to take off the granny, provided it's not on the same rivet as the middle. Unless you wanna change the the chainring size... Now that is a different story.

Or just run it as a 3 ring crank...or try to find a bike or crank with bolt on rings..
