    Cog/freewheel compatibility?

This isnít necessary MTB related, but definitely singlespeed and off road, so I need the experts here to help me.

Working on my SSCX bike (Bianchi San Jose, horizontal rear entry drops). I bought a wheelset, old Shimano Ultegra WHR600, and planned to use one of many of my cogs (HBC, rennen, endless, surly) and a spacer kit. Unfortately, I think thereís some sort of issue with the free hub. Thereís a ďstepĒ in the splines about 1/8Ē from the end of the free hub, and all of my cogs stop right there. Iím sure I could take a file to the cog and make it work, but Iíd like to know why Iím having this issue. Is this freewheel something other than Shimano (SRAM or Campy or something)? Iíve never had any issues getting a SS cog on a freehub before. I tried multiple brands of cogs all with the same result.

Any inside would be appreciated before I break out the files.

The higher splines are Shimano Ultegra / Dura Ace 10-speed specific.

See here: Shimano Cassettes & Freehubs (scroll up a tiny bit).

You might be able to swap the 10-speed freehub for a more universal Shimano freehub, but I don't know for sure. It probably has to be an Ultegra or Dura Ace freehub, but I'm not sure if a 9-speed freehub will work with that hub body.

Or you could get an aluminum cog and file the recessed sections down a little. Thats what I would try

I'm planning on filing the cogs to fit, seems like a much easier solution.
