    Chunky CX or lighter 29er?

    Started SS, went to Alfine 8 to see what I was missing, now going back to SS until my knees give up.

    Current profile:
    -> 6' 4"
    -> 250lbs.
    -> Room/budget/passion for one bike only.
    -> Ride priorities in decreasing order: commuting, cross country, road touring, singletrack.

    I'm currently on a Surly Ogre and it's an absolute beast. I love bashing it around town, but the heft of the thing limits my range and agility in traffic with the one gear.

    A flatbar cyclocross seems ideal, but I'm not sold on durability. I'm a heavy, merciless rider and like to trundle across cobbles, stairs and deep gutters, plus a bit of singletrack.

    So, should I be looking at cutting weight on a 29er, or will a solid CX take the pain?

    I'd prefer a light 29er, fat tires rule.

    agreed, i'd take a light 29er over a CX any day. way more versatility.

    I think there's a thread in the 29er forum called "more monster cross," check that out.

    Knew I could rely on MTBR to affirm my prejudices.

    If I got a cross bike I'd just be sad whenever I got the chance to wreck myself on singletrack.
