    Budget Rigid Steel 26"

    Hi,
I was wondering what is out there for a budget rigid steel 26" bike? Something around $300 or so. I know the monocog used to be around that price but its gotten more expensive. What else is available? Thanks!

have you considered buying a USED mountain bike, maybe one going cheap because the drive train is WORN OUT and converting it.... you could do pretty well for under $300

Keep checking craigslist, then check reviews on mtbr. If price is right...

i know about buying used, but I'm not really looking to buy a bike right now, just wondering whats out there for NEW bikes. For the 29er's, they at least have the dawes deadeye at around $300, but what about 26"? I got a 26" monocog now, but when i bought it the price was $350ish new, but since then the price went up 50%, and I can't think of any similar bike around the $300ish range.

I just picked up a GT Peace at my Performance on Sunday. Price was $499 and then I used a 10% off coupon. But we are still well above the $300 range as you suggested.

Its a decent bike but I dislike the seat, handle bar, stem and rigid front end. Swapped it all out with parts off my xc bike. Now it is much nicer! Oh, and the pedals are just cheap $10 steel cage ones. Oh, and while the brakes are disc's they still suck! I mean they work but having problems getting them aligned so they don't rub. But what can you expect for that price?
