world because of my overall dislike for slow steering and the lack of a flickable bike. My current ride is a Haro Mary and itís just too long, heavy, and steers like a barge.

I'd like to look into a light and all purpose SS 26" frameset. Ideally I would run this bike as a SS in the winter with a rigid fork and a 1x9 the rest of the year.

So far I've looked into the Santa Cruz Chameleon and I like the versatility and design. Does anyone have other framesets I should be looking at?

Despite being a big guy 6'5" and 240lb I'm not really 100% sure if 29"
is right for me .... i like to flick the bike around. MY choice in 26" would be a Chameleon ... looks good, handles well if you believe the reviews on this site, good maybe great local dealer.

I just picked up/built a Bianchi SASS. It's a sweet steel frame, nice and light with good geometry. I would have also considered a Spot.

I just built a 29 inch singlespeed, too. My intent is to ride them back to back to compare. I doubt that I'll sell either of them in a hurry, but it'll be nice to see (ride) the difference for myself.

    Good luck with your search.

Rockin a 26 monocog flight. Pretty nice ride with classic 71/73 geometry

+1 on the Bianchi, I have the MUSS (also steel and fairly light at 4.25 for med.). You can score any of the **SS line for relatively cheap (since they don't make them anymore). The frames allow 650b setup also in case you want to go in-between 26 & 29 (which is what I am currently working towards).

I also looked hard the Redline's, it came down to geometry for me (Redlines are a bit heavier too), the Bianchi bikes have the best geometry I have ever ridden on a bike. Soma is also another fairly light and good geometry frame (and fairly cheap also)

You mean someone still makes a SS 26" bike?

    VooDoo Wanga

    Check out the VooDoo Wanga.

My Wanga has been through multiple variations over the years and it is a great bike. Super versatile, light, perfect geometry, and bombproof. Steel rides really crisp but forgiving. Reasonable price too.

Currently I have it is a 1x6 with a Pike fork set to 120mm on it which is a really fun solid technical cross country setup. I rode it SS for a couple of years.

Tons of good choices out there.

Why yes, and you can find them in the Kids department at Sears

    I kid, I kid. I have 3 29ers, but still rock my 26" Spot.

Wow, I'm amazed at the number of recommendations here that don't have derailleur hangers, as you said your planning on running it 1x9 most of the year. The monocog and bianchis are out, so is the soma I think. I have 2 chameleons, one is 1x9 and the other is SS, I think you're on the right track with that idea. Also the Voodoo is a pretty sweet bike, +1 to it.

Would the Onone Scandal be an idea? (not sure if the 26er has the dropouts as their 29er?)
Just to open up other ideas, you can get chain tugs that convert track ends to hold a derailleur. DMR make them I think?

    Ooops. Sorry to the o.p.

The voodoo wanga is a nice option -- steel, butted main frame. I've ridden a Chameleon and the ride was a bit too harsh for my tastes.

If you run a tensioner that will give you alot more choice.

+1 tensioner. Or, if you do rigid year round, hows about an Old Skool frame? Drop outs have enough movement for tensioning the chain and do 1x9 (Or 2x5!!) juuust fine.

It does indeed. I bought mine as a singlespeed but was able to order a right side dropout with a hanger. Put that on and an MRP 1x chain guide up front for a 1x9 setup. Super versatile ride and not too expensive. Chameleons are also a great bike but I prefer the steel frame. If you don't mind dropping $1400.00 on a frame, check out the Ibis Tranny. Haven't ridden one but they they have the ability to be geared or SS and in carbon.

we'll gloss over the fact that by definition a "ss" frame wouldn't accept gears, and that we're really looking for a geared frame that's ss-adjustable!

I'd vote for the hoooligan too.
Couple reasons: my old hooli was swapped from 24's, 46'er, 26's, 69er, even fat roadie tires on 700's F+R.
never failed me, never felt "weird".
(ooh!! I jacked with the geo bigtime too!! still fun! ran everything from 3 to 5" forks, and even slapped a Giant TCX cyclocross fork in the front, dropped the nose in the dirt but it was for funky street use so worked great anyways)
lots to be said for a comfy, but stiff power transfer frame, that never feels "out of sorts".
If steel is real then aluminium is supercallafragiliniun!

is right for me .... i like to flick the bike around. MY choice in 26" would be a Chameleon ... looks good, handles well if you believe the reviews on this site, good maybe great local dealer.
2nd the Chameleon recommendation, it's a great bike if you're looking for something 26" and versatile. I've got two, both have been through phases as dirt jumpers, single speed racers, and regular everyday trail bikes. The old one (2000) is retired from trail duty now and is a daily commuter.

May I ask, is the derailleur hanger integral with the drop-out, or a part of the tensioner?

I've got an older Monocog and have considered either running a 2x1, or a couple gears on my DX cassette hub (because I'm fat and my knees and hips hate me). It would be pretty easy to machine a new tensioner with a hanger to mount a derailleur. (just wondering if one already exists so that I don't have to waste my time in the machine shop)

[edit: well, how about that? http://www.ebikestop.com/dmr_10mm_ch...air-FS3102.php ]

This definatley helps confirm what I thought about the Chameleon. I'm torn between a total new 26" build up or look for a new 29" frame with better geometry for a quicker more nimble ride.

Now I'm pissed that I missed out on a 1 year old Chameleon from Ebay last week.

    Thanks all for the insight.

Kinesis Decade Prestige Frame! It's fun to ride and comes with horizontal and vertical dropouts (with hanger). Tange Prestige Steel. So it's not too heavy.
    I like mine a lot.

I've got a 29er as well and I love it for straight up trail riding. If I had to have just one bike though it would be the Chameleon hands down.

Like voodoochild said, the Bianchi SASS is unbeatable. Dedacciai steel, track ends, classic diamond shape with Italian pedigree, sexy, the ladies love to stare at it.
