    Best tensioners?

    OK, here we go.

I am converting a 29er hardtail to SS, and it looks like the most direct route is some sort of tensioner.

The Soulcraft Convert, and the Rennen look the most solid to me.

Does anyone have any experience with either of these?

There has been plenty written, just use the search tool but for the most part people are saying the Rennen. I have only had a Singleator and the spring failed on me.

I have a Soulcraft on my 29er and have experienced no problems with it, works great. My 26" SS has a singleator and I can say that it doesn't tension the chain as well as the Soulcraft. A half link might help you set up the bike without a tensioner, or it may help you shorten the chain a little more even if you still have to have a tensioner.

    What frame are you converting?

If your frame has breezer type dropouts, you may have problems fitting the Rennen. Otherwise, it probably gives you the most solid tensioner.
I'm running a Soulcraft on a Breezer and it works fine.

I got a rennen extremely solid. The only problems that you might run into can be fixed with a simple steel washer from the hardware store.....atleast i think that's the only problem

My rennen has been working great. The only complaint I have is that not all skewers will be long enough. I guess it cant be helped, but I cant find a bolt on skewer long enough to use with it which would look a lot cleaner in my opinion.

The frame is an X-Caliber (29er)

I like the look of the Soulcraft, because it can be flipped out of the way for wheel changes.

Do you have to loosen that bolt to move the Rennen?

I've said nice things about the Singleators in the past. When they work, they're fine, but the springs on both of mine have just broken. Why?

Nonetheless, the best tensioner is no tensioner. Try to find the magic ratio for your bike (the set of ratios that allow you to have a tight enough chain without a tensioner)
