    bar and stem question

Let me get this straight: where the stem clamps the bar, the diameter is 1"; where the brake levers and shifter pods clamp the bar, the diameter is 7/8". Is this right?

You are correct sir, bar, to stem clamp is 1" or 25.4mm, grip/brake lever area is 7/8", there are also newer oversized bar stem combo's that are 31.8MM clamp area, but they still have 7/8" grip/lever area. almost all bmx bar and stem combo's are 7/8" from handle bar clamp area to grip area. And most road stuff is slightly larger at about 26mm, unless it's the new 31.8mm oversized like the mtn oversized.

And road bars are ~23.8 mm in the grip/lever area.

This is something I've been wondering about: with a road bar being only .6mm larger clamping area, couldn't one fit a road bar in most MTB stems? Seems like a small enough difference that it should work.
