    Idea!

There's more than one member in here that are either straight-edge or darn close to it.

No beer, occasional (read rare) fancy drink.
*Come to think of it, the last time IIRC we had libations was on my Frosty Ride, and the '06 SingleSpeed Social before that..

Personal reasons at first, other's later. I have no problem with watching friends have fun,
just little tolerance for stupidity, and lack of self-control. Anytime someone crosses that line, I excuse myself.

I just haven't ever acquired the taste for it. I'll drink the occasional mixed [read: girly] drink or something, but beer doesn't do it for me. I'll have my water, thank you.

Yeah, I'm a bit like that, really don't fit in - I'm a non drinker and have just taken to riding singlespeed.
Cop a lot of **** for it when I go to dinner at races with mates and I'm the only one drinking soft drinks :P

I don't typically drink, you know, in the saddle-does that count?

I SS and take a beer pretty frequently. I rarely take two the same day.

I fail to see why SS and beer should be associated.

I also fail to see why the two would be associated, but going by what you read all the time, it does seem as if they are.
Anyway, I never drink alcohol of any kind but I'm passionate about singlespeeding... How odd... Must be something wrong there...

    None for Me I'm Riding

I haven't drank in about 10 yrs. Seems like there is a lot of emphasis put on drinking in cycling in general. I only ride SS now for the fun of it, not the social aspect. Although I do enjoy that to, obviously or I wouldn't be participating in this thread. The bottom line is what I learned when I stopped drinking: I don't need it to have fun. No prejudice, just not for me.-But i do love the tats.

I have had the same 6 pack in my fridge for the last 3 months I would say. I drink a beer ~ every 6 months. I like a good beer, but I don't always want to drink one.

    I have a 26er SS, and a 29er SS.

I'm nowhere near an alkie, more like a recovering cat 2 roadie who is trying to not take cycling and training so seriously. Hence a recent resolution is to drink more beer. Had this last night. Heaven.

    Near Beer

I quit drinking a couple years ago. But no one ever said anything to me after a ride. I don't know if anyone cares what is in the bottle, even if it is NEAR beer!

Well, I guess the nekkid part makes up for you not being an a*.

..so glad I have yet to be there for that, lemme guess, Demo, or SeaOtter, right??
*Would make for an interesting angle to this year's SingleSpeedSocial if I make it.

Nick, you're not anywhere near that stereotype, at least in my eyes.
~Maybe it's because in our circles, the subject comes up so much,
and the fact that you hold BBQ's plays into that part too.

    ~Maybe you're just "Ridin Dirtay".

Bought my Spesh Epic in 05, and about 6 months later stumbled upon New Zealand's finest beer...Epic Pale Ale. They match perfectly.

Now I need to find a beer to match my Single Speed. Its a UK frame called a Malt 3. What are the chances of finding a beer called Malt. Hmmm

That said, I have nothing against beer, as long as quantities remain moderate. And if someone does not like - or want - beer, there'll be something else. Sometimes I prefer Sprite myself....

Well, I have to admit that nothing tastes better than a nice beer after a long ride . I don't see any reason why anyone should be scrutinized if they don't though. Heck, that's one more beer for me.

Before I really got back into riding I picked up a DirtRag magazine. From flipping through those pages it sure seemed like I was going to have to start downing the beer to fit in!

I lived in Germany for 5yrs and never liked beer. I went to Oktoberfest once, bought a beer to pose for photos..

I was never into tats, don't have any myself. I can apreciate the artistry of it all and such. If it were for myself, I would think I'm 'buying' my cool. I used to smoke a bit of green stuff, but don't any more. I don't drink to get drunk... okay maybe a little buzzy from time to time, but that's it. No facial hair, no crazy haircuts or dye jobs, don't drive a fancy car. I used to be a musician, but haven't played with anybody for years. I still have a home studio collecting dust.

I'm actually kind of boring, but I like to ride bikes.

Another straight edge here, vegetarian too, my only vice is a coffee every morning. I actualy went without coffee last summer, but I missed it

I used to be a big partier when I was in my teens and early twenties, gradually lost interest in being "buzzed", felt like it distracted me from what was real: going hard and going big

If I need to relax, I don't need a beer to do it, all I need is a good ride or ski, maybe some gear to work on, etc...

I used to make fun of all the straight edge kids when I was a hard-drinking, using, womanizing piece of dog poop. 20 years of sobriety and enlightenment later, I still make fun of them, but I admire them as well.

Once an addict, always an addict in my case. I'm just glad I found something healthier to abuse. It seems like now I'm always trying to keep cycling from running my life and taking too much time away from my beautiful family, but its a million times better than having drugs and alcohol running MY life.

    Do what YOU want though!

I ride a 6 speed with tall gears, so it's kind of like a singlespeed, but faster... Anyways I don't care for the booze of any kind. I do however smoke a pack of Pall Mall filters every day, so what the heck.

Support your local bike shop. Buy online if its the absolute best price, but give your LBS a chance to match the price first.

I do a lot of things and I also drink beer. Eating and socializing are about the only two things I'll do WHILE drinking beer. By now, you may have seen my avatar flash the subliminal message. I was drinking beer many years before I started SSing.

I understand that this thread is a gereralization.

As for associating the DOD with beer with my avatar; I guess you'd have to ride with us to understand. Many DODers don't drink beer. Albee drinks wine. We make fun of Lou because he only drinks PBR. We require newbies to bring beer on the first ride to insure that we will bring them safely back to the cars (beer). Barbie Camp is described as "drunken debauchery". Beer is part of our society and is included in every event even when beer is not allowed. Of course SSers drink beer. Beer drinkers also SS.

I'm willing to bet that at least a couple SSers do everything. ie tats, piercing, beat their wife, steroids, dogfights, child porn, child porn fights, etc etc But I highly doubt that every SSer does everything except SS.

So how many SSers pick their nose in a rental car and then wipes it on the interior?

How many male fixies wear women's pants?

After a long day of work, I am drinking one right now debating what trail to do tomorrow. And I do not know relate ss with beer at all...the key is to have balance and control of your life. I can have an average of 12 to 24 beers a year. Hope that will not kill me...I think the risk of getting kill in my ss is greater that the cold beer that I am enjoying right now...

Immediately after a ride I'd rather have a cold Pepsi, but with a post-ride meal, gimme a beer!

... and if we just ...

I'm not too big on drinknig booze at all. Seems to lead to problems.
If I really need a drink I'll just sit in the dark and load my Glock while I hit the sauce...
Then I plan my next tattoo and try to think of other ways to let the world know that I ride bikes even when I'm just buying coffee....
Then I think about those that have wronged me....
    Then my goatee gets longer....
Then I know I'm different, like all the rest.
Oh, then I get my needle and spoon and drift off to paradise as I crap my pants and see my life slipping away.

I find most people that stopped drinking beer were drinking TERRIBLE beer. I'm 25 now, come from a long line of addicts. I decided when I was ~15 that I would never taste alcohol until I thought I was old enough to handle it. I started drinking beer when I was 23, and quickly became a beer snob/ homebrewer, and I never drink to get drunk (so far). Being responsible is never easy.. Good beer is good, stop drinking busch or whatever.. miller.. etc. Belgians are your friends.

Haw haw! I dunno, I'd say in the big scheme of things security systems are more important than custom bicycles.

To me, a perfect day of group biking should begin long before the ride and end long after. It should start with a morning coffee followed by a big brekky and more coffee. Next it entails readying the Camelbaks and maybe looking over the maps again. Loading the bikes onto the car (if need be) gives some thrill even if it is a PITA. The trailhead antics lend its own level of excitement, adding to the crescendo before ultimately hopping on the bikes.

After the ride, which hopefully took several hours, there is the post-ride shut-down, where we drink a Pepsi and talk about the trail. Onward to the post-ride meal, which I wash down with a cold, cold beer. Later that day I'll stretch out or better yet, get a massage to feel the delicious muscle soreness get squeezed out.

Beer and single speed MTB's go together like Fisher to Mt. Tam. One helped create the other.

When the "movement" of 1 speeds started in the hey day, it was quite a drunken stuper.

My first 1 speed race included a 40oz of OE!!!! Ya baby!!! Puked my guts out!!!

That was a long time ago.....but.....

    I ride 1 speeds. I drink beer.

If you do- cool, if you don't cool and your belly must be smaller than mine!

    Does Homebrew count???

Drink beer, brew my own beer, some ink and riding SS only. I'm cool if you do or don't drink. However, if you don't drink I have more for me...

I used to homebrew a lot too, mostly extra bitters. With better availability of craft beers and family demands for time, I tend to buy more than brew lately. Would always rather have one good quality hoppy beer than a 12 pack of cheap american beer. I make sure I get my ride in first though.

Hey all, I'm 55, weigh 150 lbs. don't train, done 7 long distance rides ( 2 coast to coast, and the great divide ), started at 45. I always have a cooler with iced beer ( my energy drink of choice ). Smoke both, wish I could quit tobacco. reminded of " Blind Faith " song " Do What You Like ". Everybody is different. Whenever I come upon someone I say " would you like a cool frosty beverage ? ". Hope to see you out there !

I don't drink too much from an alcoholic perspective, but maybe too much from a Fat Tire causing a fat tire around my waist. Most in the SS class don't weigh their chicken breast for dinner either. I've got a tattoo also, only one but a lot of ink for what it's worth...since that has come up too. Just enjoying the sport.

    Funny thread

Don't drink too much anymore. But a post ride Fat Tire or Guinness is a tasty treat. Also enjoy a couple frosties while building bikes. I guess since none of my bikes have more than one gear, there's some kind of correlation there...somewhere.

    To each his own.

Beer and riding were meant to be together, hands down. Although the last ride i did i craved a coca-cola after the ride more than anything else. Maybe i needed the sugar cause my legs were so wiped i wasnt able to make the last climb to the cars in one shot.

"I feel Sorry for those that do not drink. They wake up in the morning and that is as good as they are going to feel All Day." - Frank Sinatra

Its true as true, I have been a hater and a drinker. I will drink it when I am really pressured (like I am now, I will drink heavy any good beer or scotch, please, beer is better in a sense because I won't drink it all like I will the scotch.) basically just to remove the thoughts that plague me. Other times it Can Be My Plague. So it really is a bittersweet relation. I much prefer herb but when I toke (specially with any "water instruments") I feel like getting out there and riding but I feel so tired that I just don't go outside. Don't think I would ride drunk either because I would be fearful of f-ing wrecking badly, like into a parked car or otherwise. I have done it sober long ago when I was a kid (not even mentioning the "front brake only face plant on a curb"). :/

So, I drink and am converting to SS as I type this. I don't drink All the time but I toke more frequently. Either way I don't think I can do either Before a ride.

I can see the beer/ss connection going both ways:

The guys I started mtbing with had a tradition of riding, and then drinking good beer afterwards. SSers also, IMO, in addition to a keen sense of tradition, have a hearty dose of individualism, which can manifest a "I'll drink what I want and when I want" attitude (seems tats go handinhand with that individualistic attitude as well).

On the other hand, I've spent the last 5 years or so prioritizing and (thus) simplifying my life, and while SSing definitely appeals to that simpler side of me. Drinking did not. So I started with gears and beers, but am currently single and sober going on 8 months. Tat-less and vegan to boot.

    Christ I'm boring.

Nothing better than a hard ride on saturday at Michaux and then off to the Mt. Holly Inn for some food, beer, conversation and the occassional surprise!!! Back to the campsite for a little bon-fire, off to bed and a moderate ride on sunday, a stop off at cassels for a beer, a game on the big screen and then back home. Camp'n, Ride'n, Beer and no work - that works for me.

I ride with some that drink, and some that dont. A cold Dead Guy Ale tastes soo much better after a ride than anything else, well to me anyways. Beer is one of those bonding things. If you drink a beer with someone, your gonna talk about all kinds of sh*t. I have no tattoos, I have piercings, but they are closed up. I dont do any drugs, but I do drink beer. I dont smoke, but I do love me some Copenhagen.
