    Have an 2003 P1

I hated the stock pedals, stem, and fork. Replaced them with some Easton Cully's, Atom Lab 65mm stem, and a Manitou Sherman Firefly. Pricey upgrades but the bike was only $400 and now it rocks.

    had a P.1...

it was fun, I used it to commute (short distances) and screw around, but I had a baby and couldn't get into urban stuff like I thought I was going to. I tried to make it XC to try out SSing...put a longer stem, added a front brake, even a rigid fork. It gave me enough of an idea, though it is certainly not an XC bike, that I got hooked and bought a Surly.
I can't be much help in terms of upgrading, I actually liked the stem (hussefelt) and had no problems with the pedals. The most common upgrade I've heard recommended is a DJ fork, depending on your intentions.
