    Anyone broken a stem?

With the extra wide bars a lot of us are running, has anyone managed to break a stem?

My friend is running a light weight stem (uses m5 bolts) and a 28" wide bar. He's also a pretty big dude at 220 pounds. I'm a little worried about him twisting the stem in half because of the torque he can apply.

I don't know about stems, but don't faceplates fail pretty easily on some milled stems?

i seem to recall a picture of a cracked thompson faceplate on the general board. that'll give way before the stem twists on itself.

    not easy to do though.

The closest thing I have to that is I was riding my old Rockhopper and the quill stem came loose. Fun for all involved.

I cracked a faceplate on a cheap stem from unevenly tightening the bolts. Just don't over-tighten anything.

I think I've got 3 or 4 broken stems kicking around in my spare parts bin. They were all low end and I'm kind of a hack sometimes, and one of them may have been recalled (can't remember for sure, it wasn't the only one that I saw crack though).
